Hanfparade Berlin 2026 — 30 Years of Demonstration for Cannabis Legalization

The Hanfparade has been Germany’s largest and most traditional demonstration for cannabis legalization since 1997. On August 8, 2026, the 30th edition takes place — a milestone that marks the development of German drug policy and the role of this demonstration in that process. The demonstration route runs from Alexanderplatz through the government district to the Brandenburg Gate and carries the motto Fair, Healthy, Enjoyable! — a review of experiences so far with the Cannabis Act.

What to expect

The Hanfparade combines political demonstration with cultural programming. The day begins at 12 noon with an opening rally at the Neptune Fountain at Alexanderplatz. Representatives from politics, science, and activism speak there about current questions regarding cannabis regulation, health policy, and legalization processes.

Around 3 p.m., the demonstration procession begins. Colorful parade floats, musical groups, and thousands of participants march through the government district, past the Bundestag to the Brandenburg Gate and back to the main train station. Along the route, there is a main stage with live music and DJ sets, information booths from associations, cultivation cooperatives, and specialized businesses, as well as opportunities to exchange ideas about legalization, medicine, and sustainability.

The program at the closing venue runs until approximately 10 p.m. The Hanfparade is open to everyone who wants to advocate for evidence-based drug policy — regardless of personal consumption. Participants include cannabis users, doctors, lawyers, environmental activists, and those interested in politics.

Location and getting there

The starting point is Alexanderplatz (Neptune Fountain) in Berlin’s Mitte district. The square is very easily accessible by public transport: S-Bahn lines S5, S7, S75 and U-Bahn lines U2, U5, and U8 stop directly at Alexanderplatz. Several bus lines also serve the station.

The demonstration runs through central areas of Berlin: from Alexanderplatz via Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, through the government district past the Bundestag to the Brandenburg Gate and back to the main train station. The closing venue is located near the main train station. For the return journey, it is recommended to use the S-Bahn and U-Bahn connections from the main train station or from the Brandenburg Gate.

Why this event?

The 30-year anniversary of the Hanfparade falls during a period when German cannabis policy has fundamentally changed. With the Cannabis Act of 2024, regulated access for adults was made possible — a goal that the Hanfparade has pursued since its founding. This edition is therefore not just a celebration, but also an opportunity to take stock: What has proven effective? What challenges remain? What comes next?

The motto Fair, Healthy, Enjoyable! encompasses three central aspects: justice for people who suffered under previous prohibition; health rather than prosecution as the guiding principle of drug policy; and cultural acceptance of cannabis as a recreational substance for adults. The Hanfparade provides a platform for discourse on these topics and demonstrates the diversity of the movement — from doctors to environmental activists to recreational users.

For Berlin, the Hanfparade is an annual major event that attracts tens of thousands of people and positions the city internationally as a place of open debate on drug policy.
