The International Cannabis Symposium is one of the few deliberately academic cannabis events on the African continent. From June 25-27, 2026, the University of Cape Town invites researchers, medical professionals, and decision-makers from around the world to discuss new findings from cannabis research.

The three-day program includes keynotes, scientific presentations, poster presentations, and workshops. The focus is on the medical application of cannabinoids, new clinical studies, public health issues, and the relationship between regulation and patient care. The symposium explicitly also examines African perspectives, such as the role of traditional healing practices, indigenous plant use, and cannabis's contribution to rural development.

The conference is aimed at researchers from universities and research institutions, as well as representatives from industry, politics, and civil society who are seeking a scientific foundation for their work. Through the involvement of the University of Cape Town, the symposium enjoys academic reputation and serves as a platform for publications in international peer-reviewed journals.

Kapstadt itself is a very popular conference destination for international visitors. The city combines academic infrastructure with spectacular scenery and can easily be combined with an extended trip through South Africa. For European researchers, the symposium offers one of the few opportunities to learn about African cannabis research firsthand through expert discussions.
